Air-Conditioning System, Chillers, Fan-Coil Units

Fan-coil is a heat exchanger with a fan. This unit takes the cold (heat) from the coolant and heats (cools) the room.

Chiller is an engineering complex; its organization is connected with the solution of many technical problems, including monitoring instruments selection, automation and management tools and methods, compressor activation support, unit protection in the case of emergency; the refrigerant charge, etc.
Chiller selection is mainly determined by the cooling load scale and the nature of its changing over time. It is also important to consider the choice of refrigerant that should circulate in the projected cooling cycle. It depends on many factors - chiller assignment, using conditions, accessibility and opportunity to use the refrigerant. The fields of application of chillers are different - residential complexes, offices and shopping centers, hypermarkets, data processing centers, data centers, laboratories, chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, laser technology, engineering, food industry and many others.
Chiller fan-coil system has a great promise as a central, multi-zone air conditioning system. Such system supports the individual climatic conditions for each individual room in the building. This is achieved by the fact that a single unit can be joined by many fan-coil units each of them controlled independently, which means that it is possible to create an individual temperature control in each space.

Chiller

A chiller is an air-conditioning system for water/ non-freezing liquid cooling or heating.

Working Principle of a Chiller

Chillers cool or heat the water. The water is running through the water piping system using a pump. The fan coil units connected to the pipeline system dispense the cooled or warmed air among the rooms. In winter, the fan coils are able to substitute the water heating system completely. For this purpose they serve hot water to the second circuit (four-pipe fan coils) or switch the fan coil system (double pipe) from chiller to the local boiler room. Chillers have an advantage over the Freon systems as the length of a line between a chiller and a fan coil units can be optional and depends on the capacity of the pump, in contrast to the multi-zone systems, there the length of the route is limited by the capacity of the compressor of the outdoor unit.

Chiller Fan Coil System

Chiller fan coil unit is a central multizonal system of heating or cooling coil and fan. In this system, the role of coolant between the chiller (central chiller) and local heat exchangers (fan coil) has not Freon but chilled liquid – common water or ethylene glycol aqueous solution. They distinguish units with air-and water-cooled chillers, which are also classified by the presence of a heating pump - heat chiller with a thermal pump can also be used for heating the rooms. Chiller Fan Coil Systems have a great many advantages over the other air conditioning systems:

  1. The number of chiller internal loads (fan coil) is practically unlimited. Chiller efficiency (for example, McQuay) can reach 9 MB;
  2. Single chiller, set for a large building, needs minimum space and volume for installation;
  3. Due to the high heat capacity of the liquid carrier a long distance rout can be laid;
  4. The wiring route does not require specific and expensive materials, which significantly affects the cost of wiring;
  5. Chiller can coil system is very flexible; each fan coil unit can maintain the set temperature in a given area;
  6. You can increase the overall capacity of the system gradually, for example, the building commission.
